Wilson masterfully paints a picture of Patten's journey, from his early life and conversion to his rise within the burgeoning LDS Church. The author doesn't shy away from the hardships and persecution faced by the early Saints, vividly depicting the intense challenges and dangers Patten faced while spreading his faith. The descriptions of Patten’s powerful preaching and his unwavering commitment to his beliefs are truly inspiring. He’s presented not as a flawless hero, but as a complex, relatable human being wrestling with faith, doubt, and the immense weight of responsibility during a tumultuous period in history.

The narrative builds to a powerful climax with the tragic events at the Battle of Crooked River. While I wholeheartedly recommend this book, I must acknowledge the significant editing issues. There are a number of typos and grammatical errors that detract from the overall reading experience. It's a shame, really, because the writing itself, aside from these flaws, is quite strong and engaging. The story is so compelling that I found myself easily overlooking these imperfections—a testament to the power of Patten’s story and Wilson’s storytelling. I truly wish a more thorough editing process had been undertaken before publication because a cleaner version would elevate this book to an even higher level.

Despite the editorial shortcomings, I found myself deeply moved by Patten's story. I learned a great deal about the early struggles of the LDS Church and the profound personal cost of religious conviction during a time of intense persecution. This book sparked a desire in me to learn even more about David W. Patten and the challenges faced by those pioneering Saints. It's a biography that shines a light on a relatively lesser-known, yet incredibly important, figure in Mormon history, and I believe it deserves a wider audience. Just be prepared for a few distracting typos along the way. It’s a small price to pay for such a fascinating and moving account of a life lived with unwavering faith and courage.
